Everything you described is exactly the way I feel. I don't understand why they sound so poor. Hi Anthony, I will never forget that moment I first heard them and thought "oh crap" Im sure a new crossover would help them no end but I was so disappointed I couldn't even look at them.
Sorry for that late reply and stay tuned for the new articles coming soon! Did you try these with a vintage Sansui receiver? It can make the world of difference. I'm powering mine with a QRX And I love them. A little update.
I took the burlap speaker covers off mine and replaced them with actual speaker cloth from joann fabrics. It took less than a yard for both and spare to redo another if needed. The factory grills were missing and the sound improvement from this was night and day. I also played around with the switches in back as I'm sure they hadn't been used in years and could here the volume swelling just by adding pressure to side of crossover.
Seemed to improve after playing with them and then I put the speakers on 12" stands and set my amplifier settings to Large. Now I think they sound pretty fantastic and much more powerful than originally thought. I can't believe I get no distortion winding my Denon all the way up. I expected distortion and a speaker to pop. It is almost as if they were meant for this receiver at 75 watt rms w peak. I believe crossovers need rebuilding and would still like to upgrade the speakers. These have been patched over the years and if like something cosmetically viewable with covers off.
I'm quite impressed with the clean bass now that I've had time to play with them and they really help accentuate my subwoofer. Not muddy at all like I've heard others say.
I picked up a couple of Sp's at a thrift store recently. After replacing the cross-over capacitors with audiophile grade caps, the sound was much better. In fact, after a few listening sessions and tinkering, I fell in love.
Very natural with acoustic music, and sensational with 60's rock. If im already using a sansui reciever, would a pre amp make any difference to the s p s? They may sound poor for a reason.Increase the search radius for more results. Based on the radius, a new location list is generated for you to choose from. A volumen alto, es lo mejor que escuche, muy por encima de los pioneer, ESS, etc de la epoca Los recomiendo con un buen amplificador marantz, sansui o pioneer. Well, all I know is these old babies SP-X series from the mid to late 70's are demanding pretty high prices on EBay right now. Here they are Sure hope I like em. HanksterJan 27, I can't coment on the SP-X series from personal experience but my guess is you're going to be happy.
The SP-X stuff looks like it's very much the same as the SP stuff in terms of design approach, just bigger, in keeping with the power wars of that time period. I'm right at the threshold of distortion and I don't like that.

I never really thought I'd go for speakers with multiple crossovers and a big 15" woofer etc the s have a 12" woofer - runs counter to my usual biases - but I just love the way the s sounded. The presence is amazing and they are a great match for vintage tubes. I know there is a major, major bias about Japanese speakers on this forum and many others I've frequented, so I would anticipate a series of pans of the SPs and SP-Xs just on principle.
That tom roll right before "Well, the rain exploded I think these old boys are really cool looking, too. DrJJan 27, What I discovered from some on-line audio reviews are; yes they are very "tube" friendly; don't take much power to drive them; don't have the "sub-woofer" kind of bass you would expect from a 16" woofer, but the soundstage is spacious and precise.
Anyways, they sure look cool and I'm having a lot of fun putting together a vintage system without spending a Kings ransom. I'm going to steer clear of that last comment with a 10 foot pole! The SPs of my dad's don't have subwoofer bass and I'm not expecting it from the SPs even with the 15" woofers. But that's OK because I actually hate subwoofer bass I often turn off the subwoofer in our home theater set up.
It just ain't natural to me Got the SPs today. Nice, but I have to say, it may be crow eating time These are really quite midrangy - not much low bass to speak of despite the big woofer I'm not talking subwoofer range, but really there's very little true bass of any kind - more like "low midrange". But they're just way too light on the bottom end.
